However, for the economically backward people and daily- wage earners, living in unhygienic conditions, even a minor illness could become a stumbling block to progress. Udavum Karangal thru its outpatient clinic provides them with affordable health- care.

Health within Reach

THIRUVERKADU :- where the main projects of Udavum Karangal in Chennai are located, has a significant population of poor and migrant laborers. Diseases arising from unhygienic living conditions, addiction due to alcohol and drugs, injuries from accidents, if left unattended can be fatal. As there are no Primary Health centers in this area, Udavum Karangal’s Community Health Care Services is a boon to the people living here.

Outpatient Clinic

Sri Gayathri Medical Mission and Research Foundation, a health arm of Udavum Karangal was started in October 2004 to provide health care to the poor. An Out- patient Clinic with 2 General Physicians, an Ophthalmologist and a Dentist look after the basic medical needs of persons living in Thiruverkadu and the surrounding villages. The residents of Udavum Karangal also benefit from this Clinic.

An average of 7500 patients benefit from this clinic every year.

Awareness and Medical Camps

As part of Health –care services, Free Medical camps are held. Immunization, Eye- care, Diabetes and General Health are some of the areas focused upon. These Camps are conducted on a regular basis, sometimes in co-operation with companies under Corporate Social Responsibility. Udavum Karangal’s Team from Community Outreach and the students of the Nursing College are actively involved in these camps.

Medical Camps:These camps are held after any natural disaster when there is risk of an epidemic. Free consultation and medicines are provided to the affected persons.
Awareness Camps:The students of Ramakrishna Vidya Niketan and the Nursing College take an active part in spreading awareness about impending health problems. This is done by organizing rallies around the Thiruverkadu municipal area with banners and distribution of hand outs.

Thus Udavum Karangal plays a major role in prevention, primary care and treatment with the hope of building a healthy society.

Gayathri Hospital

Our experience in running the OP clinic showed that there was an urgent need for starting a Community Hospital in Thiruverkadu. The foundation stone for a 50 bed Hospital, a dream project of Mr. Vidyaakar, was laid in September 2015. The upcoming Gayathri Hospital will commence Phase I operations during the first half of 2018.
