Covid catastrophe Challenged by the team

udavum karangal

When all is done and dusted and Covid-19 a thing of the past, everyone will try to forget how they got holed up in their homes, scared of human touch, as a minuscule virus took down our entire world. But everyone will surely remember how each one helped the other in overcoming this challenge.  The Doctors, Nurses, Paramedical staff, Police, the Government and not the least the individuals and the NGOs who provided succor to the impoverished.  It is the Well Wishers of Udavum Karangal who have put us in the map of those who helped the needy families who were on the edge of their lives.

Our activities towards Covid relief so far…

FEEDING THE HUNGRY –

90 days in a row

Mahatma Gandhiji’s quote – “There are people in the world so hungry, that God cannot appear to them except in the form of a Bread”.

It is a daily activity of Udavum Karangal in feeding the ravenous and the dependants, numbering 1000 residents,  within our campus. The need arose for us to feed the homeless, daily wage workers and the families without jobs, outside our campus, during this Covid pandemic.

Udavum Karangal provided 1000 food packets daily from 25th March 2020 for continuous 90 days to the beggars, physically challenged, blind , construction and migrant workers.

REHABILITATION KIT to the needy families

The national lockdown due to the outbreak of Corona virus has played havoc with the lives and livelihood of many.  Our first priority was the families of the   girl students of our school – Ramakrishna Vidya Niketan , who with no income and having exhausted their savings were literally stranded without food.

Udavum Karangal with the support of Well wishers could rescue these families by providing them Rehabilitation Kit consisting of Rice, essential provisions, vegetables  and medical accessories.

They were provided with the kit worth Rs 1700 in two phases  – 700 families on 21st May and 1000 families on 31st May 2020.

Rescue of the Slum dwellers during Lockdown

Skipping  one time meal by those born with silver spoon is a rare feat but for the slum dwellers it is a habit.  More so, the Covid pandemic has now become a catalyst for prolonging their poverty.  Realizing the need for immediate assistance, Social Workers of Udavum Karangal swung into action in identifying the suffering families in the various slums  of Thiruverkadu giving them  assurance for their sustenance.

It was on 7th June  2020, that Udavum Karangal distributed Rehabilitation Kit to the 500 slum  dwellers in Padmavathy nagar, Shanmuga Nagar and Velappan Nagar of Thiruverkadu Township.

Mr. Ma.Fa Pandiarajan, Hon’ble Minister for Tamil Culture, Govt. of  Tamilnadu also joined us in the distribution of the Rehabilitation Kit.

The people with Godliness

given their due……

The Sanitary Workers who were recently rechristened as ‘Thooimai Paniyaalargal’ play an important role in maintaining public health as well as keeping places clean, especially those working at Thiruverkadu Township.  Unfortunately, they are a neglected lot and are looked with disdain.  But, even during this Covid lockdown, the Thooimai Paniyaalargal, unmindful of their health and family, have been engaged in clearing the street bins and maintaining cleanliness.

Udavum Karangal identified the most deserving people among the Thooimai Paniyaalargal and distributed on 18th July,   Rehabilitation kits containing Rice, Provisions, medical accessories and vegetables which would last for a month.  They have also been given the assurance of free lunch at our Home.

Three elderly starving members of a family rescued….

The world has not seen the likes of the corona virus ever before.  The fear, helplessness and isolation that have arisen from this pandemic have crippling effects on people’s lives who are already under pathetic conditions.

Here is a family where the bread winner is an 85 year old lady, her 75 yr old brother  is suffering from Henken’s disease and her 60 year old daughter bedridden for the past 40 years due to rheumatic disease.  They became isolated due to lockdown with no income, no food and no medical help.

Now Udavum Karangal has taken the responsibility to give them a new lease of life.  Social Workers tidied their house, paid the rent, old lady attended by Doctors & nurses, brother admitted in a Home for treating him for Henken’s disease and the bedridden daughter given a haircut, new dresses and tasty food desired by her.

This could be possible  only because of the support given by  Well wishers who willingly participated in their rehabilitation.  The family is happy today under our  care.

Service at the door step….

The two blind elderly couple with their dependant sons were starving during lockdown.  We responded to their call and gave them rice and provision for a month. They breathed a sigh of relief and said they would now eat their full meal that night. Before lockdown, the old blind couple used to sell snacks and stationary items in the EMU local trains enroute Tambaram to earn their living.

Their arduous journey between life and death has been brought to an end only temporarily, waiting to get back to normalcy.

Similarly , Ms. Ezhilarasi, who was paralyzed at the age of 23 years, had called Udavum Karangal , asking for help in the form of a Wheel Chair. She was living with her mother in a rented house at Ramapuram.  The Social Workers of Udavum Karangal rushed with a Wheel Chair which she was very much delighted to receive.  Immediately she sat on the Wheel chair and started moving around like a kid inside the small room of her rented house. There was no limit for her joy.

We received a distress call from a Samaritan on 29th May 2020, stating that there is an old lady residing near his residence, who needs immediate assistance and care.  Mrs. Kamala, aged above 80 yrs was lying in a pathetic state at her residence near K-4 police station, Anna Nagar.  She was unable to move as she met with an accident and her leg was amputated. She has a son who has left her in lurch. The client  was all alone by herself when Mr. Ganesh , a Social worker of Udavum Karangal gave her a walker .  She broke down with tears and profoundly thanked the organisation for the timely help.
